India Expresses Deep Concern Over Demolition of Hindu Deity Statue, Urges Dialogue and Protection of Heritage

New Delhi, 24 December 2025 — The Government of India has expressed serious concern over reports regarding the demolition of a Hindu deity statue in an area affected by the ongoing Thailand–Cambodia border dispute, emphasizing that such actions are deeply disrespectful and unacceptable, regardless of territorial claims.

In an official statement issued on 24 December 2025, the Spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, Shri Randhir Jaiswal, confirmed that Indian authorities had taken note of reports concerning the demolition of a statue of a Hindu religious deity, constructed in recent times, in a conflict-affected area along the Thailand–Cambodia border.

The Government of India underscored that Hindu and Buddhist deities are profoundly revered across the region, forming an integral part of a shared civilizational and cultural heritage. It stressed that acts which disrespect religious symbols and sacred heritage deeply hurt the sentiments of followers worldwide and should not occur under any circumstances.

India further stated that territorial or border-related disputes cannot justify actions that damage religious and cultural heritage, warning that such acts risk exacerbating tensions and undermining regional harmony.

Concluding its statement, the Government of India strongly urged both sides to return to dialogue and diplomacy, calling for renewed efforts to restore peace, prevent further loss of life, and avoid additional damage to property and cultural heritage.

The statement reflects India’s firm position in support of religious respect, cultural preservation, and the peaceful resolution of disputes through diplomatic means, in line with international norms and regional stability.
